about

I first heard 'When my heart says Sing, I Sing' as I’d been asked by the musician Duke Special to go over to Belfast and play at a tribute concert to its writer, Jimmy Kennedy. The concert had been commissioned by the BBC and there were all sorts of proper singers featuring, my main role was really just to be playing bouzouki. But, I was delighted when they asked me to sing, also.

The first few song suggestions they put forward, I just couldn’t do. Jimmy is perhaps best known for his song ‘The Teddy Bear’s Picnic’, not a style I am particularly suited to. But when I read the words to ‘When my Heart Says Sing’, that seemed right to me. There was a humour in the lyric which I greatly appreciated. I had to write a new tune, of course. I ain't no Frank Sinatra. It was first released, I think, in 1937, by Ronnie Munro & His Orchestra.

MayKay came on board last minute and made it very special. I sang her my take of ‘When my heart…’ and she naturally joined in. It all sounded so effortless, we suggested to the producers that she sang with me on the recording, and they said Yep straightaway.

The live version we did is probably still available on the BBCi Player somewhere. Fashionistas amongst you will be delighted to see that I’m wearing the same suit as I am in the ‘Sukhe Phool’ video, a suit that Suhail’s father had made for me as a gift
