about

‘At First She Starts’ was recorded for a tribute album to the great Lal Waterson that was compiled by my much-missed friend Charlotte Greig and released on Honest Jon records.

Lal Waterson is possibly my favourite songwriter and I’ve reworked her songs a fair few times both live and on record – YTK did a take of ‘Song for Thirza’ and solo or with the Athletes I’ve recorded ‘Midnight Feast’, ‘The Scarecrow’, ‘Wilson’s Arms’ and probably a few more. There are two versions of this song sung by Lal available and I based mine on her solo piano take, which has a raw, almost improvised feel to it.

‘At First she Starts’ was recorded by Julie Mclarnon at Analogue Catalogue studios, when they were based just south of Manchester. I guess Emma and I were on tour, and I’d guess Doogie wasn’t with us, or he’d’ve been playing bass. As is, ‘At First She Starts’ has the dubious honour of being the first JY track to feature Jon Thorne on bass. Julie had suggested we use Jon, him being local to the area, at the time. I remember Jon played his part too growly at first and I got angry with Julie for allowing a “jazzer” on the track. She wheeled him back in and he did a rather more restrained take. Analogue Catalogue have now moved over to Newry, and Yorkston Thorne Khan record there quite regularly. I bring this growling bass story up quite often with Jon. He’s always delighted to hear it.
